How To Tune A 12 String Harp – the most important at a glance
A 12 string harp is a beautiful, unique instrument that can add a beautiful, ethereal sound to any music. Though they are often used in classical and Celtic music, they are becoming increasingly popular in other genres as well. They can be a bit daunting to tune, however, as each string is actually two strings of different pitches that need to be in harmony with each other. Here is a stepbystep guide to tuning your 12 string harp.
To start, you will need a tuning fork, a pitch pipe, or an electronic tuner. You will also need to know what key you want to tune your harp in; the most common keys are C and G. Once you have all of your supplies, find the string that you want to tune to the lowest note in the key you have chosen. For our purposes, we will tune the C string to a low C.
First, pluck the string with your right hand and identify the note that it is currently tuned to. Let’s say it is tuned to an A. Using your left hand, lightly touch the string at the fifth fret. This should give you a low C note.
Now, pluck the string with your right hand and tune it until it matches the pitch of the low C note you are touching with your left hand. Be sure to pluck softly, as plucking too hard can cause the string to go out of tune.
Repeat this process with the remaining strings, working your way up the neck of the harp. When you get to the B string (the highest string), you will tune it to the note one octave above the low C that you tuned the first string to.
Once all of the strings are in tune, you are ready to play!
