Bajo Bass – the most important at a glance
A bass guitar, also called an electric bass, or simply bass, is a stringed instrument similar in appearance and construction to an electric guitar, but with a longer neck and scale length, and four to six strings or courses. The fourstring bass is usually tuned the same as the double bass, which corresponds to pitches one octave lower than a cello.
The bass guitar is a transposing instrument, as it is notated in bass clef an octave higher than it sounds. To read bass guitar tablature, which shows musical notation for the guitar, the bassist must be aware of which strings correspond to which notes. Since the standard tuning is EADG, the lines and spaces of the bass clef correspond to the pitches EGBDF, with the low E string being responsible for the bottom line. The electric bass has several single and double course variations.
The origin of the term “bass” is uncertain, but it is believed to derive from the French word basse, meaning “low.” Bass has been described as “the sound of an electric guitar played through a bass amplifier.” The bass guitar is the foundation of the rhythm section in many types of music, such as rock, blues, jazz, funk, and reggae.
The electric bass guitar was first invented in the 1930s, with the earliest models being handbuilt by luthiers. Leo Fender massproduced the first commercially successful electric bass guitar, the Precision Bass, in 1951. The Precision Bass was released in increments of one octave below the standard guitar tuning of EADGBE, with the lowest note being E1 (20.6 Hz).
The first bass guitars were purely acoustic, with hollow bodies and passive pickups. In the 1950s, manufacturers began producing bass guitars with solid bodies and active pickups. The first commercially successful solidbody electric bass guitar was the Fender Precision Bass, introduced in 1951.
The largest manufacturer of bass guitars is Fender, which alone produced over 1.3 million basses in 2009. Other important manufacturers include Gibson, Ibanez, Yamaha, Warwick, and Ernie Ball.
